Hello Brothers and Sisters,

On October 6, 2016, the Office of the Election Supervisor (“OES”) mailed ballots for the International Officer election to all members of the IBT in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.  Local 810 wants to make sure that they hear our voice and that you vote in the election for the top officials of your International Union.  Watch for your secret ballot in the mail.  When you receive it, follow the directions to cast your own vote and mail your secret ballot yourself using the postage-prepaid envelope.  The secret ballots will be returned to a post office box controlled by OES, and the count is planned to start on Monday, November 14, 2016. Please don’t forget to VOTE!

If you do not receive your secret ballot by October 17, 2016 contact OES to request a ballot.

Health Fair 2016

Local 810 hosted our Annual Health Fair in September.  It was another huge success with hundreds of members and their families in attendance.  All of our providers were there talking with the membership and providing information about their services.  Members enjoyed the barbeque as their kids lined up to get ice cream from Mister Softee.  We raffled off and handed out thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes that were all donated by our health care providers.  Everyone left with a smile on their face and we look forward to doing again next year.  If you missed it, be sure to attend the next one, and bring the family!

Last month Local 810 Officers, Shop Stewards and proud members participated in the Labor Day parade in NYC.  It was a great way to show support for Labor in this city and our country.  We walked up 5th Ave to the cheers, smiles and waves of men, women and children standing on the sidewalks. America’s Oldest Art Supply Store Closes After 111 Years

1

Since New York Central opened in 1905, it has become a destination for artists and designers from around the world. Renowned artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquia, Willem de Kooning, and Cecily Brown bought their supplies there. This past Friday, after 111 years of serving generations of downtown artists, students and teachers, New York Central Art Supply Inc. has closed it’s doors.  Local 810 has represented workers at NY Central for decades.  Shop Steward Kelly Hunt has been leading this dedicated work force for more than twenty years.  Over the last few years the company has been on a decline due to online and chain store competition that lead to dwindling sales. Recently they also lost their month-to-month lease for the building which caused the family-owned business to decide to close its doors.

Although this is the end of an era, the hard working staff at NY Central and their dedicated service will never be forgotten.  Many are now looking for new employment and Local 810 is assisting them in sending their resumes to other Union represented work sites.  These men and women have a variety of skills and experience and can offer a tremendous amount to any employer.  If you have any leads or know of any jobs that are looking for hard working staff, please contact us at info@local810.org.  Thank you.

TEAMSTERS LOCAL 810 NEWS – 6/1/16

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

I’m reaching out to the membership again to keep everyone up to date in regards to all that is going on at your Union. We’ve continued to have a busy year and have negotiated additonal contracts with ABC Carpet/ABC Oriental, Accurate Forming, Amsterdam Tobacco, ASTRO Electroplating, Center Candy, Columbia Button, Eckhoff Trucking, Globe Wholesale, Long Island Carpet, Majestic Carpet, MGR Equipment, Sunrise Candy, T&R Tobacco. There were no givebacks in any of these ratified contracts and all of them had increases to wages and benefits. This was not an easy task during a time of economic instability in this country as well as skyrocketing health care costs. Several of these shops were former Local 805 represented companies that were facing dramatic increases to employee contributions as well as possible reductions in benefits due to the status of their health fund. These events were avoided because of the merger into Local 810 and the hard work of your Union representatives. Your Business Agents, Shop Stewards and committee members worked diligently to preserve our strength and power at the negotiation tables.

Since the merger last March, your Health & Welfare fund has paid over $1.2 million dollars in past claims and services for former 805 members. We have also made several improvements to your health plans – raised prescription drug coverage (Plan 45), allowed stepchildren onto your coverage (both Plan 45 & 18), increased physical therapy (both Plan 45 & 18), increased chiropractic visits (plan 18) and we also now cover acupuncture visits (both Plan 45 & 18). These additional benefits have come without the need to increase your out of pocket costs and are being provided to help improve the health of our membership and their families. Like I’ve stated in the past, without our health we have nothing.

Your Union and its Trustees have concluded their look into possible changes in our insurance coverage and are pleased to announce that additional improvements are on the way. We are currently negotiating with selected companies and look forward to continuing to bring top notch health care to our members. Technology has changed dramatically over the years in regards to the way health care services are provided and are we are excited to bring these changes to our membership. Over the Summer you will be receiving literature about these changes and improvements. If you have any questions or concerns about your current benefits or have any issues with outstanding bills, please contact your Shop Steward and Business Agent or call the Union at 212-691-4100.

Thank you and have a great Summer!

Saludos Hermanos y Hermanas,
